Jedi-Jedi is a Yoruba word, which literally means “something eating up the anus”. It is a term commonly used in Nigerian traditional medicine to describe a range of symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, or even hemorrhoids.

Causes of Jedi-Jedi
Jedi-Jedi is supposedly caused by too much intake of sweet, sugary or spicy foods.
Common diseases that are mistaken for Jedi-Jedi
While this condition is associated with the gastrointestinal tract, it is commonly mistaken for several other conditions like:
- Diarrhea: a condition characterized by frequent and watery stool.
- Dysentery: a disease that involves severe diarrhea and passage of pus and blood in the faeces.
- Piles/Hemorrhoids: a condition caused by painful masses of dilated veins in the anal area.
- Rectal Prolapse: this happens when part of the large intestine slips out of anus causing pain and discomfort.
- Pain in the lower back.
- Pruritus ani: itchiness of the skin around the anus.
Agbo Jedi: The Herbal Mixture for Jedi-Jedi
Agbo Jedi is commonly used to treat Jedi-Jedi in Nigeria, particularly in the southwestern regions, however, it’s also used as a preventive treatment. It is usually hawked on the street or sold in the market and consists of bitter leaf, scent leaves, grapefruit juice, sorghum leaves, naphthalene tablets, and garlic.

Does Agbo Jedi really work?
While Agbo Jedi is widely used in traditional medicine, its effectiveness and safety have NOT been scientifically verified.
Prolonged or excessive use of such herbal mixtures may sometimes to adverse effects, especially if the herbs are not properly prepared or dosed.
It may also be adulterated with non-herbal ingredients or even dangerous substances, potentially jeopardizing the consumer’s health.
Bottom Line
Jedi Jedi isNOTan actual disease, but a series of symptoms of actual diseases. Therefore, it is difficult to produce just one drug that can treat it.
